Crappy Portrayal of Cancer by Hollywood!

The Hollywood sign | A Los Angeles icon

I was recently reading a book, and the author called “Cancer”, the worst word in the English language.  Not to take away from crappinest of cancer, but there are worst diseases out there. To name a few Multiple Sclerosis, Cystic Fibrosis, & ALS. At least with cancer there are constant new treatments coming out, there isn’t much for the above.

The day doctor Wakelee told us Molly had cancer, she told us the word is scarier because of hollywood. She is right, with cancer I always imagined a bald person puking in the bathroom. Recently I read a blog about a lady who was denied a spot on a television for breast cancer because she wasn’t bald, we can all thank hollywood for that. Cancer is hollywood’s favorite disease and they have over used it.

As I mentioned on my Doctors blog, we went on vacation last spring with our family friend Diana. Coming home,  we had a long lay over and decided to see a movie. Glancing at the list of movies, only movie that worked for us was Blended starring Adam Sandler, and Drew Barrymore. You would think this would be a funny movie, but the main theme was that the children’s mother had died from cancer. This was repeated over and over through out the movie, to the point that Diana and I looked over at each other and shook our heads. I just loved the fact that Molly and the children were watching this. Thanks Sandler!!!!

The Fault in Our Stars was the hit teenage movie of the year last year, which was based on a book by John Green written in 2010. Story is about two teenager with cancer in love. You won’t believe how many people ask me of I have seen the movie, my response usually is “I don’t have to, I live it”! By the way I read the book, and it was cute.

Of course you gotta love who portrays LC patients in Hollywood. Breast Cancer gets the cute mom from Parenthood and LC gets the the psycho drug dealer from Breaking Bad. For once, I would love to see a movie about a cute 39 year LC patient with a handsome husband and two gorgeous kids. In this movie the mom is doing well on targeted therapy and goes on with life. Reminds of you any family we know? Who do you think would play me? Bradley Cooper or Matthew McConaughey? 🙂

Happy Friday Everyone!
